In the last year, I have devoted myself to articulating the benefits of middle-of-the-night meditation (MNM) and Dream Reliving (DR)--a tandem presleep practice that I developed in the 1980s as a way to enhance spiritual attunement and induce lucidity and greater responsiveness in susbsequent dreams. As a younger man, I began practicing regular MNM, and had many of the lucid dreams and mystical eencounters that provided the foundation for my books and life work (See Articles and Excerpts). At that time, I was an undergraduate at the University of Texas

rooming with Mark Thurston, who has remained one of my best friends ever since. Later, I did my dissertation at the College of William and Mary on Dream Reliving as a way to induce lucid dreams and greater reflectiveness in dreams. Since then, I have been using a combination of MNM and Dream Reliving in psychotherapy to assist my clients in overcoming lifelong impasses, and opening up to deeper spiritual communion.

Mark and I continue to research MNM/DR on a personal and academic level. He is currently Senior Fellow at George Mason's Center for Consciousness and Transformational Studies. In our respective roles as teachers and academic researchers, we recently collaborated to conduct a month-long eGroup and research study on MNM and Dream Reliving with 68 members of the Association for the Research and Enlightenment. We also collected data in an effort to investigate the effects of MNM/DR on a person's sense of well being, as well as the impact of this nighttime regimen on subsequent dreams. We will soon be reporting on the results of that study, and perhaps developing a study to use MNM/DR for the treatment of distressing dreams associated with PTSD.

I have just launched an online community of MNM/DR practicioners’Äì’Äìcalled the Dawn Treader forum’Äì’Äìby using the web board here at www.spiritual mentoring.com. I hope to provide ongoing support and mentoring for those who are committed to this dynamic practice. I have also begun to compile a list of resources for those of you who may wish to undertake MNM/DR. Most of those resources are here on my website, and will be listed on the Dawn Treader Forum under "Resources." If you want to join the Forum, or share a dream in our Dream Sharing Forum, you can access the forum
here, but you will have to register before you will gain access to the member-only forums.
