Andy Bryant Joins the Pro-Line - NewWater, Inc. Team!

Andy Bryant, Certified Yamaha/Mercury Technician, recently joined the Pro-Line - NewWater, Inc. staff. Bringing a prodigious background in the outboard motor industry, Andy will be working with PLNW in its new capacity as a Certified Dealer for both Yamaha and Mercury. Previously, PLNW could only install new outboards on its own boats, but now it can re-power any boat. This will create a much wider customer base for PLNW. Welcome Andy!

Dorado on the Fly
by Tom Dorrell

The Gulf is finally calming down. A few days ago the boys and I took a late trip out Packery about mid day in the Ibis to look for a few Ling or whatever we could hunt down under the birds. The Ibis is a bigger faster version of my old Curlew made by Tim Clancy of New Water boats in San Antonio. I finally traded up this last spring and could not be happier.

The nice thing about his boats are that I can run the flats around the no wake zone at Packery channel and drop in the channel just in front of the bridge. This is a nice perk that not many boats can handle. We then ran out about 1130 with Clint having a dentist appt with Dr Fossum about 1600hrs, not much time. I was warned by the secretary of war not to be late and saw the sideways look as we left that meant I was not to be trusted.

Coop, Clint and I hit about nine rigs with out seeing a single ling and we had only a couple jacks that showed a lack of interest in our feathered offerings. Then as time was counting down I spotted birds on the horizon and the tell tale splashes usually associated with Spanish mackerel working bait balls under the birds. Off we went in a flash. The Ibis will run 51 mph top end even with my large fly casting towers front and back. A running speed in the gulf with 2 foot chop is still about 38 to 40 mph with out getting beat up. The length at 22 feet really helps.

We were able to get on them and get up current using the remote trolling motor to drift down in to them. It wasn’t long before Cooper hooked up on silver spoon only to have him spit it. Then Clint sees a larger shape swim by the front casting basket. I really though there might be a random kingfish around the bait ball but I did not actually see the fish. We chased several groups, the action is fast and you have to get your bait in there quick before they go down. It is tough for a grown man much less Coop who just turned seven. Like his brother he is ahead of the curve and bagged a snook in South Bay earlier this year throwing artificials on his own out of the Ibis.

The clock was beginning to squeeze us for time when we hit the last group of birds. Clint was up front with me next to him when one of the big fish he had seen materialized off the port bow. Clint was there in one back cast, a perfectly placed cast and then one strip fish on. Holy Toledo it is a 3 foot Dorado! The fight was on. Clint does not get to fight the offshore denizens and this one whipped his butt on a 10 weight for about 20 minutes. I was still astonished we found Dorado at 7 miles and no structure. Pretty fine. The final minutes of the fight were nerve wracking as a spinner shark shot out of the

water by the boat. Cooper thought that was super cool till we saw a 6 foot shark following the mahi. Luckily the Dorado freaked and made another run escaping what was probably a lazy shark. I boated dinner, we took some pics and took off for the jetties after looking at one more rig on the way in.

Thanks to the speed of the Ibis and its ability to take the bigger chop that had grown on the water since the battle, we made it to the jetties pretty quickly with out incident. We jumped back on the flat after the bridge and ran the 4 inch depths to the ICW and landed at Marker 37 in time to clean the fish. (You should have seen the looks bringing a Dorado out of an Ibis at the cleaning station). Clint stabbed the boat on the trailer and off we went to the dentist with 15 minutes to spare. My lovely wife only shaking her head with a smile. We made it again.

Happy trails, Doc Tom

See Bill Blodgett's TV Show Featuring NewWater Boats!

We are please to announce the launching of a wonderful TV show, titled Majesty Outdoors, hosted by Bill Blodgett and featuring NewWater boats. Not long ago, Bill had the idea that it would be a great thing to expose underprivileged children to the beauty and wonder of the outdoors. On each segment, Bill invites a child to join him on the water aboard his Ibis to experience a part of life that he or she has probably never known before. The amazement and delight of the "stars" makes the show not only a service to the children but an inspiration to the rest of us. See Majesty Outdoors at 8:30 am on Versus. Bill's website is www.majestyoutdoors.org. A trailer for his TV show can be found here on our movies page.

NewWater Unveils the Stilt!

At the 4th Annual Owner's Tournament in Rockport, Texas, Tim and Leslie Clancey––along with the entire NewWater Boatworks team hosted an unveiling of the eagerly-awaited Stilt––the technical poling skiff that complements NewWater's storied line of cutting-edge shallow water performers.

stiltattriplegut
The unveiling took place at 6:30 pm, Saturday, August 29, 2009, at the Lighthouse Inn. Surrounded by Tournament contestants and NewWater friends who had come to Rockport just to see the Stilt, Tim gave a brief introduction to the Stilt's conception and innovative design features. The general consensus that was that NewWater had, once again, hit a home run, and that the Stilt was destined to lead the way among contemporary poling skiffs.
